Lush rainforest trees on Kauai

Hanalei, Princeville and Kilauea see heavy winter rain, and even the east side stays humid most of the year. In those conditions, fiberglass batts soak up moisture, lose their R value and can become a place for mold to grow. Closed cell spray foam does not absorb water. Applied to the roof deck or the underside of a raised floor, it keeps damp air away from the framing and helps the house dry out instead of staying wet.

Kauai neighborhood homes with mountains behind

Poipu, Koloa, Hanapepe and Waimea are much drier and sunnier, and homes there fight heat more than rain. A sealed and insulated attic keeps roof heat from radiating into bedrooms and makes ceiling fans and AC far more effective. Many Kauai homes mix both problems, with a hot roof and a damp crawl space, so we often combine open cell foam overhead with closed cell foam below.

Steel roof framing ready for spray foam insulation

Kauai families remember Iniki. Closed cell spray foam bonds to roof sheathing and framing, adding rigidity to the roof assembly while it insulates. It also slows salt air from reaching fasteners and metal connectors inside the attic. It is not a replacement for proper hurricane ties, but it is a strong upgrade when you are building new or replacing a roof.

What is the best insulation for a wet north shore home?

Closed cell spray foam, because it does not absorb water and acts as a vapor barrier. We use it on roof decks and under floors where moisture is the biggest risk.

Does spray foam help with mold?

Spray foam does not kill existing mold, but by blocking humid air from reaching cool surfaces it removes the conditions mold needs. Any active mold should be cleaned before insulation.

Can spray foam make my roof stronger?

Closed cell foam bonded to the roof deck adds stiffness to the roof assembly. It works alongside, not instead of, hurricane clips and straps.
